Optimizer vs Compressor — What's the Difference?
Both make GIFs smaller, but by different philosophies. The GIF compressor uses lossy techniques — subtly altering pixel data for maximum size reduction. This GIF optimizer is lossless-first: at default settings it rearranges how the file stores information without changing a single visible pixel. Choose the optimizer when quality is non-negotiable — brand assets, portfolio pieces, pixel art — and the compressor when minimum file size is the goal.
Where Lossless Savings Come From
- Frame differencing (Level 1): if only a small area changes between frames, only that rectangle is stored instead of the full frame.
- Transparency optimization (Level 2): unchanged pixels inside the stored rectangle are marked transparent, compressing dramatically better.
- Exhaustive analysis (Level 3): multiple storage strategies are compared per frame and the smallest wins — the recommended default.
Typical results: 30–70% smaller for unoptimized GIFs (like those produced by screen recorders and many converters), and 5–20% for GIFs that have already been through basic optimization.
The Optional Color Step
GIFs may use up to 256 colors per frame, but plenty of content — UI recordings, charts, cartoons, memes with flat colors — uses far fewer meaningfully. Cutting the palette to 128 or 64 colors shrinks every frame's data. This step is technically lossy, but for the right content the difference is invisible. Try 128 first; if the preview looks identical, keep it.
