Crop GIFs Like a Pro

Cropping is different from resizing: instead of scaling the whole image down, a GIF cropper cuts out a rectangular region and throws the rest away. It's the right tool when your GIF has black bars, distracting backgrounds, unwanted UI elements from a screen recording, or when you want the subject centered and filling the frame.

This tool applies your crop box to every frame of the animation simultaneously. The result is a clean, stable GIF with the original frame timing and loop behavior — just tightly framed on what matters.

Popular Reasons to Crop a GIF

  • Remove letterboxing — cut the black bars from GIFs made from widescreen videos.
  • Clean up screen recordings — crop out browser toolbars, taskbars and desktop clutter.
  • Make square GIFs — many platforms and profile slots prefer 1:1 aspect ratios.
  • Focus on the action — tighter framing makes reaction GIFs punchier and more readable at small sizes.
  • Shrink the file — fewer pixels per frame directly means a smaller GIF.

How the Coordinates Work

The crop area is defined by four numbers. X and Y set the top-left corner of the region you keep (measured in pixels from the GIF's top-left corner), while width and height set the region's size. For example, to keep a 300×300 square starting 50px from the left and 20px from the top, you'd enter X=50, Y=20, width=300, height=300. Watch the live overlay to dial it in visually.

After Cropping

Cropping already reduces file size, but for the lightest possible GIF run the result through the GIF compressor afterwards. Want different overall dimensions too? The GIF resizer can scale your cropped GIF to any target width. And if you need to cut frames from the timeline rather than pixels from the image, that's the job of the GIF trimmer.

Frequently Asked Questions

No — the same crop region is removed from every frame, so the animation continues to play smoothly with identical timing and looping.
Yes. Set equal width and height values (for example 400×400) and position the X/Y offsets so the subject sits inside the square shown in the live preview.
Yes. File size depends on pixel area, so cropping away 40% of the image typically removes a similar share of the file size.
The tool never modifies your original file — it creates a new cropped copy. Your source GIF stays untouched on your device, so you can always re-crop from the original.
